Changing to the Next Normal
The history of humanity has been marked by evolutionary change – gradual processes whereby small changes to our operating environment mean that over a period of time we have had to adapt and do a number of things differently in order to survive and prosper.
The Coronavirus pandemic was unforeseen and unpredictable. Like war or natural disaster it meant that everyone had to radically alter their behaviour and change the way things were done in a very short period of time. Health and key frontline services have had to continually alter their plans to avoid being overwhelmed and sunk by increasing numbers of people needing treatment; governments have had to rip up their 5 year plans, step in and spend eye watering sums of money to support public bodies, put areas of the economy on life support and furlough many millions of workers who have been told not to go to work.
If you didn’t understand change and how you would cope and react to it in the months before the pandemic, 2020 was the year that the life lesson on change was delivered at fast pace and at full volume. Many people have been challenged about what is important and learnt that some things that they took for granted were no longer guaranteed.
The news that vaccines are now available means that we are probably at the beginning of the end of this. The beginning of 2021 has inevitably made businesses start to think about what a post pandemic world looks like and how they need to shape themselves and their organisation to be ready for the next normal as nations work to rebuild and grow their economies.
SMEs will be at the core of economic recovery, but there are huge challenges ahead.
