Thoughts On Effective Leadership

To ensure that the goals and needs of a business are met, effective leadership is essential. It ensures that, besides the above, quality work is produced and that the business operational aspects run smoothly.

It is fair to say as history shows, that the effectiveness of a leader can determine whether a company thrives or sinks.

Leadership is not just control as it requires the leader to embrace the values and beliefs of the team that the leader oversees. A great leader will engage a whole person, not just a group of people. This translates into making employees both productive and morally strong.

1. Communication
Leadership requires great communication skills and the ability to relate to different personalities. It needs the ability to convey trust and credibility and contribute to the building of the reputation of the business. It needs absolute integrity and a willingness to treat all with the utmost respect. It requires a desire to talk to people and a willingness to give them a platform to share their views openly but constructively. From this the strong leader will gauge feedback and use that feedback to improve their own performance.

Talk is cheap – actions and attitudes speak a thousand words and convey a lot of information.

2. Action
Decisive action is vital – we talk about acting in the action zone without too much haste and avoiding too much procrastination. Being decisive takes time and practice. Moreover, it can be difficult for managers to make such decisions because they are uncomfortable making them. For this reason, managers should look for ways to improve their decisiveness.

In today’s fast-paced environment, decisiveness is essential. People with this quality are known to be biased toward action. Decisiveness not rashness is perceived as a positive quality. The right decisions are the ones that make change but follow your purpose – the ‘why’ you are in business.

3. Company Culture
Leadership style will be one of the most important factors in determining company culture. How a leader communicates and behaves in the workplace can make or break the culture. The most successful leaders balance these qualities to create their desired culture. The best leaders are personable and understand how the company works. They show that they care about the success and development of all employees.

A leader is a model for their people. By modelling their behaviour, they can help build a culture of ‘psychological safety’ for their team. Similarly, leaders who are uncivil or have a harsh personality teach their subordinates to act the same way.

4. Ideas, Ideas, Ideas
If you are leading a business, you must have an open and receptive mind on new ideas and create an environment where your people are encouraged to talk about and suggest new ideas. Don’t discount these ideas too easily. Remember that not all of the great ideas in business come from the leadership and make use of the massive human computer that the business possesses in the form of the brains of the entire team. Getting people with Know How, in a room and providing them with the facility and the freedom to think of new ideas and respecting all contributions is a surefire way to unearth some ‘gems’ that can be used in the business to its benefit and add to your reputation as a good leader
